    Just wanted to outline the positive points of the use of the DSS recorder and transcription service your company has provided to the Springfield Police Department. On several occasions I have been able to accommodate a victim by taking a statement right on scene. On other occasions I've been able to interview and receive statements where a victim would have had to be transported to the police department for the same statement; for example:

      The train accident that occurred behind Lake Lorraine. The engineers and conductors of the trains involved were interviewed and statement taken. Where as, in the past we would have had to wait for the involved participants to come down to the police department. (4 statements taken that afternoon).

      The Luis and Clark armed robbery on Bernie Avenue. The involved participants were interviewed but were unable to respond to the police station for statements. Witnesses/Victims were unable to leave pharmacy due to filling patient prescriptions. Arrangements were made and statements taken on scene (4 statements taken)

    As far as I'm concerned the recorder has proven to be a great tool in the field.

    Thanks for introducing us to Sten-Tel Transcription Services. It has made our jobs easier and much more efficient. We can take statements in the hospital, at a residence or business without inconveniencing people. It has helped when people cannot leave to come into the station because of babysitting problems and for those who are just reluctant to come to the Police Department. It helped tremendously with the baby shower incident where numerous statements had to be taken in a short period of time. All of the statements were entered into the Grand Jury without a problem.

    As a new user of the Sten-Tel transcription services it has taken only a short time to see the value of this service. During the initial presentation by Christian Barthelette, we were told how it would help us cut down on the time officers spend doing reports. In practice I have found this to be a great benefit. I have used the digital recording and transcription service for a report that would normally take me up to an hour or more of typing. It has taken as little as seven minutes recording time to produce a full report. At one point I even did the math and figured I would have to type a 100 words a minute to accomplish what I have been able to do with the digital recorder. I don’t type that fast!

    Christian had stated it is only your own imagination that limits its use. After talking with other users of the system I too have found that you can record from an answering machine or the video in my cruiser video/audio system and just send it out to be transcribed. You just can’t beat that, and I’m sure there are many uses I haven’t come up with yet.

    I have been using the transcription service through a digital recorder since it was assigned a few months ago. I find it to be indeed an asset. I have used it in the following manners:

      1. On scene witness statements. Depending on the situation sometime witnesses are not as forth coming at a later date.

      2. Recording voice mail from cell phone. Including anything from threats of bodily harm to messages that refute a suspect's statement or establishes a time line.

      3. I have used it while taping a suspect's statement in the station interview rooms. Being that these statements are recorded, I can still up load the verbal statement and get a transcribed copy for the folder.

      4. I have used for general information and note taking at scenes and through my tour of duty.

    I consider the Sten-Tel as another 'tool on my belt'.

    With respect to the transcription service and the use of the digital recording device I was issued from Sten-Tel, I have found it is extremely useful in obtaining statements from witnesses and or drivers from motor vehicle accidents. With witnesses and or drivers unable to complete a hand written statement, Sten-Tel has proven to save the investigating officer time by not having to travel to local emergency rooms for statements and by obtaining valuable eye-witness accounts at the scene, before they leave without the officer obtaining necessary information. I believe that this program should be continued.

    The Sten-Tel transcription service has been very useful for several different facets of our work. I have been able to use it to record statements/confessions at the jail which is a remote location which doesn't allow us to use the equipment that we have in-house. The Sten-Tel was used and a CD was burned to present as evidence in a murder investigation. It is most useful to me that I have found in the the field. I hope or the reasons that I have found the recorders to be useful that they are kept to assist us in our investigations.
